Quick Summary
August keypad issues fall into two categories: the keypad hardware itself not responding (dead batteries, physical damage, or pairing loss), and PIN codes not working (deleted access, expired guest access, or a lock firmware bug that corrupts the PIN database). Both are fixable without a locksmith.
Step 1: Check Keypad Battery
The August Smart Keypad runs on its own separate battery (not shared with the lock). A dead keypad battery is the most common cause of an unresponsive keypad. Press any key. If no LED lights up, the keypad battery is dead. The keypad uses a CR2032 coin cell battery. Replace it by removing the back cover (slide down or unscrew depending on model). After replacing the battery, press any key — the LED should light up within 2 seconds.
Step 2: Re-Pair the Keypad to the Lock
If the keypad lights up but PINs don't work, the keypad may have lost its pairing with the lock. August app → Settings → Keypad → Remove Keypad. Hold the back button on the keypad for 10 seconds until the LED flashes rapidly (reset mode). August app → + → Add a Device → Smart Keypad → follow pairing prompts. Stand within 10 feet of the lock during pairing.
Step 3: Check PIN Code Access Settings August app → Users & Access → select the user whose PIN isn't working. Check Access Schedule: if set to specific hours, the PIN only works during those times. Check Access Expiry: guest access codes expire automatically. Renew or remove the expiry date. Delete the PIN and recreate it: tap the user → Edit Access → Remove Access → re-invite.
Step 4: Fix Keypad Not Lighting Up After Battery Replacement Ensure the CR2032 battery is inserted with the positive (+) side facing up. Clean the battery contacts with a dry cotton swab — corrosion from old batteries can prevent contact. If the keypad still does not respond after a fresh battery: the keypad hardware is faulty. Contact August support for replacement (keypad has a 1-year warranty).
Step 5: Update Lock Firmware
A bug in August firmware versions 1.59.0–1.61.2 caused keypad PINs to stop working after a lock reboot. The fix was released in firmware 1.62.0. August app → Settings → Lock → Firmware → update to the latest version. After updating, delete all keypad PINs and re-enter them from scratch to clear any corrupted entries.
