Quick Summary
August smart locks lose Wi-Fi connectivity for four main reasons: the August Connect Wi-Fi bridge has lost its connection, the lock is on a 5 GHz network (August only supports 2.4 GHz), the lock firmware is outdated, or the lock is too far from the bridge or router. The lock itself does not connect to Wi-Fi directly — it uses Bluetooth to talk to the August Connect bridge, which then connects to your router. Understanding this two-step architecture is the key to diagnosing the problem.
How August Wi-Fi Connectivity Works
If the bridge loses Wi-Fi, you lose remote access. If the lock loses Bluetooth to the bridge, you also lose remote access. Both failures look identical in the app.
Step 1: Check the August Connect Bridge Locate your August Connect bridge (the small white plug-in device, usually near the lock). Check the LED status light: Solid green: connected and working Flashing green: connecting to Wi-Fi Solid yellow/amber: connected to lock but no internet Flashing red: no Wi-Fi connection If flashing red: unplug the bridge, wait 10 seconds, plug back in. Allow 60 seconds to reconnect. If solid yellow: the bridge has Wi-Fi but cannot reach August's servers. Check your internet connection.
Step 2: Confirm 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi
August Connect bridges only support 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. They will not connect to 5 GHz networks. Log into your router admin panel (typically 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1). Confirm a separate 2.4 GHz SSID is broadcasting. If your router uses band-steering (single SSID for both bands), create a dedicated 2.4 GHz network or disable band-steering temporarily. Reconnect the bridge to the 2.4 GHz network via the August app: Settings → August Connect → Change Wi-Fi Network.
Step 3: Check Bluetooth Range Between Lock and Bridge
The August lock communicates with the bridge via Bluetooth, not Wi-Fi. If the bridge is too far from the lock, remote access fails even when the bridge has a strong Wi-Fi signal. Move the August Connect bridge to an outlet closer to the lock. Ideal distance is within 20 feet with no thick walls between them. In the August app: Settings → August Connect → check Bridge Signal Strength. Aim for 3–4 bars. Thick doors, concrete walls, and metal door frames all reduce Bluetooth range significantly.
Step 4: Re-pair the August Connect Bridge August app → Settings (gear icon) → August Connect → Remove August Connect. Unplug the bridge. Wait 30 seconds. Plug back in and wait for the LED to flash yellow (setup mode). August app → + → Add a Device → August Connect → follow setup prompts. Enter your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi credentials when prompted.
Step 5: Update Lock Firmware August app → Settings → Lock → Firmware. If an update is available, tap Update. Keep your phone within Bluetooth range of the lock during the update (within 10 feet). Do not close the app during firmware update. The process takes 2–5 minutes. After update, test remote access by locking and unlocking from outside Bluetooth range.
