Quick Summary
Ecobee remote sensors go offline for three main reasons: dead battery, the sensor has moved out of range of the thermostat, or the sensor's pairing has been lost. The fix is almost always a battery replacement followed by a re-pair if needed. Ecobee sensors use CR-2032 batteries that last 18–24 months.
Step 1: Replace the Battery
This fixes the problem in the majority of cases. Remove the sensor from its mount (slide or pop off the back). Open the battery compartment. Remove the old CR-2032 battery. Insert a new CR-2032 battery (positive side up). Replace the cover. Wait 60 seconds. Check the Ecobee: Main Menu → Sensors — does the sensor show as connected?
If yes: done. If still offline: proceed to Step 2.
Step 2: Check Sensor Range
Ecobee sensors communicate via a proprietary 915MHz radio signal. The range is approximately 45 feet through walls. Move the sensor within 10 feet of the thermostat temporarily. Check if it reconnects. If it reconnects at close range: the sensor was out of range at its original location. Move the sensor to a location closer to the thermostat, or add a second thermostat/sensor to extend coverage.
Step 3: Re-Pair the Sensor
If the sensor has a new battery and is within range but still shows offline, the pairing may have been lost. Ecobee thermostat → Main Menu → Add Sensor. Follow the on-screen instructions. When prompted, press the button on the back of the sensor (or remove and reinsert the battery to trigger pairing mode). The thermostat will detect the sensor and add it. Give it a name and assign it to a room.
Step 4: Check for Interference
Other 915MHz devices (some baby monitors, wireless security sensors) can interfere with Ecobee sensor communication. Temporarily turn off other wireless devices near the thermostat. Check if the sensor reconnects. If it does: identify the interfering device and move it away from the thermostat.
Step 5: Reset the Sensor
If re-pairing doesn't work: Remove the battery from the sensor. Wait 30 seconds. Reinsert the battery. Immediately go to the Ecobee: Main Menu → Add Sensor. The sensor should appear in the list within 60 seconds. Complete the pairing process.
