Step 1: Check the Furnace Breaker
The thermostat gets its power from the HVAC system, not from a separate power source. If the furnace breaker has tripped, the thermostat loses power entirely. Go to your electrical panel. Find the breaker labeled "Furnace," "HVAC," or "Air Handler." If it's tripped (in the middle position): flip it fully to OFF, then back to ON. Wait 2 minutes. Check if the Ecobee screen turns on.
Step 2: Check the Furnace Fuse
Most furnaces have a 3-amp fuse on the control board that protects the thermostat wiring. A short circuit in the wiring will blow this fuse and cut power to the thermostat. Turn off power to the furnace at the breaker. Open the furnace panel (usually a removable front cover). Find the control board — it's the circuit board with all the wires connected to it. Look for a small automotive-style fuse (usually 3A, color-coded). Pull the fuse and check if the metal strip inside is broken. If blown: replace with the same amperage fuse (available at hardware stores for under $5). Turn power back on and check the Ecobee screen.
Step 3: Check the C-Wire Connection
The Ecobee requires a C-wire for power. If the C-wire has come loose at either the thermostat or the furnace, the screen will go black. Remove the Ecobee display from the wall base. Check the C terminal on the base — is a wire connected? Is it firmly seated? Press the release tab and reinsert the wire firmly. Also check the C terminal on the furnace control board — the other end of the same wire. Reinstall the display and check the screen.
Step 4: Check Wiring at the Furnace Control Board Turn off power to the furnace. Open the furnace panel. Find the control board and locate the thermostat wire terminals (usually labeled R, C, G, Y, W). Check that all wires are firmly seated in their terminals. Look for any wires that have burned, corroded, or come loose. Tighten any loose connections. Turn power back on and test.
Step 5: Test with a Known-Good Power Source
If all wiring checks out but the screen is still black: Remove the Ecobee display from the base. Connect a micro-USB cable to the port on the back of the display (if your model has one). Connect to a phone charger. If the screen turns on: the display is fine and the problem is the power supply from the HVAC system. If the screen stays black with USB power: the display unit itself may be faulty. Contact Ecobee support.
