Quick Summary
The "Calibrating" message on an Ecobee thermostat is normal when the device is first installed or after a reset — it runs for up to 15 minutes while the thermostat's temperature sensor settles. If it stays in Calibrating mode for more than 30 minutes, or if it shows "Calibrating" every time the system tries to heat or cool, there's an underlying issue with the temperature sensor, wiring, or HVAC system.
Is This Normal?
Step 1: Wait 15 Minutes
If the Ecobee was just installed, reset, or power-cycled: wait 15 minutes before doing anything. The calibration process is normal and the thermostat will not heat or cool during this time. After 15 minutes, it should resume normal operation.
Step 2: Check Room Temperature vs. Thermostat Reading
If Calibrating appears repeatedly, the thermostat's temperature sensor may be reading incorrectly. Use a separate thermometer to measure the actual room temperature near the thermostat. Compare with what the Ecobee displays. If they differ by more than 3°F: the sensor may be faulty or the thermostat is in a bad location (near a vent, in direct sunlight, on an exterior wall).
Step 3: Check Thermostat Location
The Ecobee calibrates based on the temperature it measures. If it's in a bad location, it will constantly recalibrate.
Problematic locations: Within 3 feet of a supply air vent In direct sunlight On an exterior wall with poor insulation Near a kitchen, fireplace, or other heat source
If the thermostat is in one of these locations: it needs to be moved or the temperature correction feature needs to be used.
Step 4: Use Temperature Correction
If moving the thermostat isn't practical: Ecobee menu → Settings → Installation Settings → Thresholds → Temperature Correction. Enter a positive or negative value to offset the reading. Example: if the Ecobee reads 72°F but the actual temperature is 70°F, enter -2. This won't fix a faulty sensor but will correct for a consistently biased reading.
Step 5: Check HVAC System Operation
If the Calibrating message appears specifically when the system tries to heat or cool, the HVAC system may not be responding correctly. Ecobee menu → Main Menu → System → Test Equipment. Run a heating test and a cooling test. Listen for the furnace or AC to start. If the system doesn't respond: the issue is with the HVAC wiring or the HVAC system itself, not the thermostat.
Step 6: Factory Reset the Thermostat
If Calibrating persists and all the above checks pass: Ecobee menu → Settings → Reset → Reset All Settings. Confirm the reset. Go through the setup process again. Allow 15 minutes for calibration after setup.
