Quick Summary
When the Kasa app can't find your device, the problem is almost always one of three things: the device is on a different Wi-Fi network than your phone, the device needs a factory reset, or the Kasa app needs a refresh. Work through these in order and you'll have it sorted in under 10 minutes.
Symptom Diagnosis
Step 1: Check Network Match Your phone and the Kasa device must be on the same Wi-Fi network. Go to phone Wi-Fi settings and confirm you're on the same network the plug was set up on. If you have separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, make sure you're on 2.4 GHz.
Step 2: Force Close and Reopen Kasa App On iPhone: swipe up from the bottom and swipe the Kasa app away. On Android: recent apps → swipe Kasa away. Reopen the app and wait 30 seconds for device discovery.
Step 3: Check App Permissions Go to phone Settings → Apps → Kasa. Ensure Location permission is set to 'While Using' or 'Always' (required for local device discovery on iOS and Android). Ensure Local Network permission is enabled (iOS 14+: Settings → Privacy → Local Network → Kasa).
Step 4: Power Cycle the Device Unplug the Kasa device from the wall. Wait 30 seconds. Plug back in and wait 1 minute for it to reconnect. Open Kasa app and check if the device appears.
Step 5: Check Router AP Isolation Log into your router admin panel. Look for 'AP Isolation', 'Client Isolation', or 'Wireless Isolation' setting. If enabled, disable it. This setting prevents devices on the same network from communicating with each other, which blocks Kasa discovery.
Step 6: Factory Reset and Re-Add Press and hold the button for 5–10 seconds until the LED blinks amber rapidly. In the Kasa app, tap '+' → Add Device → follow the setup wizard. Make sure your phone is on 2.4 GHz during setup.
Step 7: Check Cloud Connectivity If the device appears in the app but shows 'offline', the issue is cloud connectivity, not local discovery. Log out of the Kasa app and log back in to refresh the cloud session.
