After changing your router or Wi-Fi password, every Kasa device needs to be re-paired with the new network credentials. There's no shortcut — the plug doesn't automatically detect new network settings. The good news is that re-pairing takes about 2 minutes per device and you don't lose your schedules or settings.
Why This Happens
Kasa plugs store Wi-Fi credentials (network name and password) in their own memory. When you change your router or password, the plug still tries to connect using the old credentials, which no longer work.
Step 1: Factory Reset the Plug Press and hold the button on the plug for 5–10 seconds until the LED blinks amber rapidly. Release. The plug is now in setup mode. This clears the old Wi-Fi credentials.
Step 2: Connect Your Phone to the New Network Go to your phone's Wi-Fi settings. Connect to your new router's 2.4 GHz network. Kasa plugs only support 2.4 GHz — do not use the 5 GHz band during setup.
Step 3: Re-Add the Device in Kasa App Open the Kasa app. Tap '+' → Add Device. Select your plug model from the list. Follow the setup wizard: enter your new Wi-Fi password when prompted. The app will connect to the plug's temporary setup network, transfer credentials, and reconnect.
Step 4: Verify Device is Online After setup completes, the plug LED should turn solid green. In the Kasa app, the device should show as online. Test by toggling the plug on and off from the app.
Step 5: Restore Schedules and Automations Check your schedules: Kasa app → tap the device → Schedule. Schedules are stored in the cloud and should reappear automatically after re-pairing. If you use Alexa or Google Home: re-discover devices in those apps.
Pro Tip: Keep the Same Network Name
If you're replacing a router, setting the new router to use the same Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password as the old one means your Kasa devices will reconnect automatically without any re-pairing.
