How Nest Auto-Schedule Works
Nest requires at least 3–7 days of consistent manual adjustments before it begins building a reliable schedule.
Step 1: Confirm Auto-Schedule is Enabled
Auto-Schedule must be enabled for the Nest to learn from your adjustments. It is enabled by default but can be accidentally turned off. Google Home app → tap your thermostat → Settings (gear icon) → Nest settings → Auto-Schedule → confirm it is On. Alternatively, on the thermostat itself: press the thermostat ring → Settings → Auto-Schedule → confirm it is On. If Auto-Schedule is off: turn it on and begin making manual adjustments. Nest will start learning from the next adjustment.
Step 2: Check for a Conflicting Manual Schedule
If a manual schedule has been set in the Google Home app or the Nest app, it overrides Auto-Schedule. The thermostat follows the manual schedule and stops learning. Google Home app → tap your thermostat → Schedule. If you see a detailed schedule with specific temperatures at specific times, a manual schedule is active. To allow Auto-Schedule to take over: delete the manual schedule entries or clear the entire schedule. Google Home app → Schedule → tap each entry → Delete. After clearing the manual schedule, make several manual temperature adjustments over the next few days. Nest will begin rebuilding the schedule based on your adjustments.
Step 3: Check Home/Away Assist Settings
Home/Away Assist uses your phone's location and the thermostat's built-in occupancy sensor to switch between Home and Away temperatures. If Away mode is activating unexpectedly, it can override the learned schedule and prevent consistent learning. Google Home app → tap your thermostat → Settings → Home/Away Assist. Check which devices are being used to determine occupancy. If your phone is listed, ensure location permissions are granted to the Google Home app. If Home/Away Assist is switching to Away mode while you are home: the thermostat's occupancy sensor may not be detecting you. Ensure the thermostat is in a location where people pass by regularly (hallway or living room), not in a rarely-used room. To disable Home/Away Assist temporarily: Settings → Home/Away Assist → turn off Away temperature and Home temperature overrides.
Step 4: Make Consistent Manual Adjustments
Nest Auto-Schedule requires consistent behaviour to build a reliable schedule. Inconsistent adjustments (different temperatures each day, or adjustments at different times) slow down or prevent learning. Adjust the temperature at the same times each day for at least 5–7 days. For example: turn up the heat at 7:00 AM every morning and turn it down at 10:30 PM every night. Avoid making conflicting adjustments (turning the heat up, then down, then up again within a short period). Each adjustment is recorded and conflicting adjustments confuse the learning algorithm. The Nest app shows a leaf icon when you set an energy-efficient temperature. Adjustments that earn the leaf icon are weighted more heavily in the learning algorithm.
Step 5: View and Edit the Current Schedule
You can view what Nest has learned so far and manually correct any incorrect entries. Google Home app → tap your thermostat → Schedule. The schedule shows all learned and manually set temperature points. Tap any entry to edit or delete it. If the schedule shows incorrect temperatures or times: delete the incorrect entries and replace them with your preferred settings. Nest will use these as a baseline and continue learning from future adjustments. To start the learning process from scratch: delete all schedule entries and re-enable Auto-Schedule (Step 1).
Step 6: Check Thermostat Placement
The Nest Learning Thermostat uses its built-in Farsight display and occupancy sensor to detect when people are home. If the thermostat is in a poor location, it may not detect occupancy correctly, which affects the learning algorithm. The thermostat should be mounted at eye level (approximately 1.5 metres / 5 feet from the floor) in a frequently used room. Avoid mounting the thermostat in direct sunlight, near a window, or next to a heat source (lamp, oven, fireplace). These cause false temperature readings that interfere with learning. Avoid mounting the thermostat in a rarely-used room or a dead-end hallway. The occupancy sensor needs to detect regular movement to accurately determine when you are home.
