What Is a C-Wire and Why Does Nest Need It?
Older thermostats only needed two wires to work — one to signal heating, one to signal cooling. Nest is a computer with Wi-Fi, a display, and sensors. It needs continuous power, which requires a C-wire (common wire) to complete the electrical circuit and provide steady 24V power.
Without a C-wire, Nest steals small amounts of power from the heating/cooling wires when the system is idle. This works for basic operation but often fails during firmware updates, cold weather, or when Wi-Fi is heavily used.
Step 1: Check If You Have a C-Wire Remove the thermostat display from the wall base. Look at the wiring terminals on the base. Find the terminal labeled C. If there's a wire connected to C: you have a C-wire. The problem may be a loose connection — push the wire firmly into the terminal. If the C terminal is empty: you don't have a C-wire. Choose one of the solutions below.
Solution 1: Install a C-Wire
If your HVAC system has a C-wire at the furnace but it wasn't connected to the thermostat: Turn off power to your HVAC system at the breaker. Go to your furnace/air handler and find the control board. Look for a wire labeled C (usually blue) that isn't connected. Run this wire to the thermostat and connect it to the C terminal. Turn the breaker back on. In the Nest app: Settings → Equipment → confirm C-wire is detected.
Solution 2: Use the Nest Power Connector (Free from Google)
If your system doesn't have a C-wire at all, Google provides a free Power Connector adapter. Order it free at store.google.com/us/product/nest_power_connector. The Power Connector installs at the furnace and uses the G-wire (fan wire) to create a virtual C-wire. Follow the included wiring diagram — it's a 15-minute installation. After installation: error N260 should clear within a few minutes.
Solution 3: G-Wire Workaround (No New Hardware)
If you have a G-wire (fan control) at the thermostat and don't want to wait for the Power Connector: Turn off power to your HVAC system. At the thermostat base, move the G-wire from the G terminal to the C terminal. In the Nest app: Settings → Equipment → Continue → select your system type without fan control. Note: This disables independent fan control. Your fan will only run when heating or cooling is active.
Step 2: Verify the Fix
After any of the above solutions: Go to Settings → Technical Info → Power. Check Vin: should be above 3.7V. Check Battery: should be above 3.6V and climbing. Error N260 should disappear within 5–10 minutes once the battery starts charging properly.
