If the current room temperature is below the Eco cooling threshold, the AC will not activate even when you manually set a lower temperature. On the Nest display: press the ring to open the menu → select Eco → check whether Eco mode is active. If it is, tap Stop Eco to return to your normal schedule. In the Google Home app: tap your thermostat → tap the temperature → confirm the mode is set to Cool, not Eco or Off. Check your Nest schedule: Settings → Schedule. If the schedule has a high cooling setpoint during the current time slot, the AC will not run until the room temperature exceeds it. Check for a temperature lock: Settings → Lock. If a lock is active, it may prevent you from setting a temperature low enough to trigger cooling.
Step 2: Wait Out the Compressor Protection Delay
Nest includes a built-in compressor protection timer that prevents the AC from turning on within 5 minutes of the last cooling cycle. This protects the compressor from short-cycling damage. The Nest display shows 'In 2+ hours' or a countdown when this timer is active. If you see a countdown on the Nest display, wait for it to expire. This is normal behaviour and not a fault. If the delay persists beyond 10 minutes, the compressor protection timer has been extended — this usually means the AC was short-cycling due to a refrigerant or airflow issue. Proceed to Step 4. You can check the delay status in the Google Home app: tap your thermostat → the delay countdown will be visible under the temperature display.
Step 3: Check the Y1 Wire Connection
The Y1 wire (usually yellow) is the compressor control wire. If it is loose, corroded, or mapped to the wrong terminal, Nest will not be able to activate the AC. Turn off power to your HVAC system at the circuit breaker before touching any wiring. Remove the Nest display from its base by pulling it straight off. Inspect the Y1 terminal on the Nest base. Press the orange release button next to the Y1 terminal and check that the wire is firmly seated. Reinsert it until it clicks. In the Nest app: Settings → Equipment → Wiring. Confirm that Y1 is listed as detected. If it is not listed, the wire is not making contact. If you recently moved or replaced the thermostat, confirm the wire labelled Y (or Y1) from your HVAC system is connected to the Y1 terminal on the Nest base, not the Y2 terminal (which is for two-stage cooling only). Restore power to the HVAC system and test cooling.
Step 4: Check for HVAC Safety Lockouts
Modern air conditioners have multiple safety switches that cut power to the system when a fault is detected. The most common are a clogged condensate drain (float switch) and a dirty air filter causing the evaporator coil to freeze.
Condensate float switch: Locate your indoor air handler unit. There is usually a drip pan underneath it. If the drip pan has standing water, the float switch has tripped. Vacuum out the condensate drain line using a wet/dry vacuum at the outdoor drain port. After clearing the drain, the float switch will reset automatically once the water level drops.
Dirty air filter: Locate your HVAC air filter (typically in the return air vent or inside the air handler). If the filter is visibly grey or clogged, replace it. A blocked filter restricts airflow, causing the evaporator coil to freeze and the system to shut down on high-pressure protection. After replacing the filter, turn off the AC for 30 minutes to allow any frozen coil to thaw before restarting.
Circuit breaker: Check your electrical panel. The AC condenser (outdoor unit) and air handler (indoor unit) are typically on separate breakers. If either breaker has tripped, reset it once. If it trips again immediately, there is an electrical fault — do not reset it again and call an HVAC technician.
Step 5: Check and Recharge the Nest Battery
Nest thermostats use a built-in rechargeable battery to maintain settings and send control signals. If the battery voltage drops below approximately 3.6V, the thermostat cannot send the 24V signal needed to activate the AC. On the Nest display: Settings → Technical Info → Power. Look for Battery voltage. Below 3.7V is critically low. The Nest charges its battery from the HVAC common wire (C-wire). If you do not have a C-wire, the battery charges only when the HVAC system runs — which creates a catch
