When a Nest thermostat is causing this, the culprit is almost always one of three things: the thermostat is installed in a bad location (near a heat source or cold draft), the Heat Pump settings are configured incorrectly, or the minimum cycle time settings need adjustment.
What Is Short Cycling and Why Is It a Problem?
A normal heating or cooling cycle runs for 10–20 minutes. Short cycling means the system runs for 2–5 minutes, shuts off, then restarts a few minutes later. This: Wears out the compressor and heat exchanger prematurely Uses more energy than a full cycle Fails to properly dehumidify or heat/cool the space Can void your HVAC warranty
Step 1: Check Thermostat Placement
The Nest measures the temperature at its location. If it's near a heat source or cold draft, it will think the target temperature has been reached (or exceeded) before the room is actually comfortable.
Check for: Direct sunlight hitting the thermostat A heating/cooling vent blowing directly on it An exterior wall with poor insulation A drafty window or door nearby A lamp or appliance generating heat nearby
If any of these apply: the thermostat needs to be moved to a more representative location.
Step 2: Adjust the Minimum Cycle Time
Nest has a built-in setting to prevent short cycling. Nest app → tap your thermostat → Settings → Equipment → System → Minimum Cycle Time. Increase the minimum cycle time to 5 minutes for heating, 5 minutes for cooling. This forces the system to run for at least 5 minutes before shutting off. Test: set a temperature 3°F above current room temperature and observe the cycle length.
Step 3: Check Heat Pump Settings
If you have a heat pump, incorrect configuration is a common cause of short cycling. Nest app → Settings → Equipment → Heat Pump. Confirm Heat Pump Type is set correctly (Air-to-Air, Geothermal, etc.). Check Auxiliary Heat settings — if aux heat kicks in too early, it can cause the heat pump to short cycle. Set Aux Heat Lockout to a temperature 5°F below your heating setpoint.
Step 4: Check the Temperature Differential (Hysteresis)
The temperature differential is how far the temperature must deviate from the setpoint before the system turns on. If it's set too small, the system turns on and off constantly. Nest app → Settings → Equipment → System → Temperature Differential. Set to at least 1.5°F for heating and cooling. A larger differential (2°F) reduces short cycling further but allows more temperature swing.
Step 5: Check for Wiring Issues
Loose or incorrect wiring can cause the thermostat to send intermittent signals to the HVAC system. Remove the thermostat display from the base. Check each wire terminal — press the release tab and ensure each wire is firmly seated. Check the wiring diagram in the Nest app: Settings → Equipment → Wiring — confirm each wire is in the correct terminal. Reinstall the display and test.
Step 6: Enable Compressor Protection Nest app → Settings → Equipment → System → Compressor Protection. Ensure this is On — it adds a 5-minute delay between cooling cycles to protect the compressor. This is enabled by default but can be accidentally disabled.
