Quick Summary
When a Philips Hue Bridge shows 4 lights blinking (or won't connect to your router), the root cause is almost always one of three: the bridge is on a 5GHz-only Wi-Fi network (Hue bridges only support 2.4GHz), the bridge is too far from the router (signal below -70 dBm), or the router is using WPA3 security (Hue Gen 1–2 bridges only support WPA2). A factory reset is rarely needed; most failures resolve with Wi-Fi band or security settings changes.

Step 1: Confirm 2.4GHz Wi-Fi Availability Log in to your router admin panel (typically 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1). Verify that a separate 2.4GHz SSID is broadcasting. Hue bridges do NOT support 5GHz. If your router uses band-steering (single SSID for both bands), disable it or create a separate 2.4GHz network. Avoid SSIDs with special characters (!, @, #) or spaces longer than 32 characters — Hue firmware has parsing issues with these.
Step 2: Check Wi-Fi Signal Strength Place the bridge in the same room as the router temporarily. If the bridge connects, signal strength was the problem. Move the bridge closer to the router or add a Wi-Fi extender. Hue bridges need RSSI better than -70 dBm. Concrete walls reduce signal by 50–60%.
Step 3: Update Router Security to WPA2 In router settings, find Wi-Fi Security or Authentication Type. Hue Gen 1 and Gen 2 bridges only support WPA2 (AES). They do NOT support WPA3. If your router is set to WPA3 only, change to WPA2 or WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode. If you have a Hue Gen 3 bridge (released 2021+), WPA3 is supported — skip this step.
Step 4: Disable WPS and MAC Filtering In router settings, find Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) and disable it. Hue bridges conflict with WPS on many routers. Find MAC Address Filtering and temporarily disable it. If the bridge connects, re-enable filtering and add the bridge's MAC address to the whitelist. The bridge's MAC address is printed on the back of the device (format: 00:17:88:XX:XX:XX).
Step 5: Factory Reset the Bridge Unplug the bridge power cable. Wait 10 seconds. Plug back in. The LED will show 2 lights (searching). Press and hold the link button (small button on top) for 10–15 seconds until the LED flashes. Release. The bridge is now in pairing mode. Open the Hue app → + → Add Light → follow prompts to reconnect.
