Quick Summary
The 'Clean Up' error in the Philips Hue app indicates database corruption or blocking on the bridge. This happens when the app tries to delete unused light profiles or scenes but encounters a lock or permission issue on the bridge's local database. The error is usually harmless but prevents you from managing lights efficiently. A bridge restart or database rebuild resolves it in 95% of cases.
When This Error Appears You tap Settings → Lights → Clean Up in the Hue app. The app shows: "Clean Up failed" or "Unable to clean up database." The error may appear after adding/removing many lights or scenes. Sometimes it appears after a bridge firmware update.
Step 1: Restart the Bridge (Soft Reset) Unplug the bridge power cable. Wait 30 seconds. Plug the bridge back in. Wait 2 minutes for the bridge to fully boot (LED should show solid green). Open the Hue app and try Clean Up again.
Step 2: Clear the Hue App Cache On Android: Settings → Apps → Hue → Storage → Clear Cache (do NOT clear data). On iOS: Delete the Hue app → reinstall from App Store. Open the app and log back in. Try Clean Up again.
Step 3: Remove Unused Lights and Scenes Manually Instead of using Clean Up, manually delete unused lights and scenes: Hue app → Lights → select a light → ... (menu) → Remove Light. Hue app → Scenes → swipe left on a scene → Delete. This achieves the same result as Clean Up without triggering the database error.
Step 4: Factory Reset the Bridge If the error persists after restarting, the bridge database may be corrupted. Unplug the bridge. Press and hold the link button (small button on top) for 10–15 seconds. Plug the bridge back in while still holding the link button. Release after 5 seconds. The LED will flash rapidly, indicating factory reset. Wait 2 minutes for the bridge to reboot. Re-add all lights using the Hue app → + → Add Light.
Step 5: Update Bridge Firmware Hue app → Settings → Bridge → Check for Updates. If an update is available, install it. Older firmware versions have known Clean Up bugs. After updating, restart the bridge and try Clean Up again.
