Quick Summary
The Philips Hue Gradient Lightstrip stops working or shows incorrect colours when the power supply is underpowered, when the lightstrip extension is too long for the controller, when the Hue Bridge firmware is outdated, or when the gradient effect is not supported by the room's entertainment setup. This guide covers every failure mode step by step.
How the Hue Gradient Lightstrip Works
The gradient lightstrip requires a Hue Bridge — it does not work with Bluetooth-only control. Each LED segment is individually addressable, which requires significantly more bandwidth than a standard colour bulb.
Step 1: Check the Power Supply and Controller
The most common cause of gradient lightstrip failure is an underpowered or faulty power supply. Ensure you are using the official Philips Hue power supply that came with the lightstrip. Third-party power supplies often cannot deliver the sustained 24V/2A required. Check the controller box LED: solid white means powered and connected; flashing white means searching for the Bridge; no light means no power. Unplug the power supply from the wall, wait 10 seconds, and plug back in. This resets the controller. If the strip lights up but shows only white or a single colour instead of gradient, the controller may have lost its Zigbee pairing — proceed to Step 3. Inspect the physical connection between the power supply cable and the controller box. A loose connection causes intermittent failures.
Step 2: Check Strip Length and Extension Limits
Philips Hue gradient lightstrips have strict length limits that affect gradient performance. The standard Hue Gradient Lightstrip supports up to 3m (TV version) or 5m (standard version) without extension. Extensions are available in 1m increments, but the maximum total length is 10m. Beyond this, the controller cannot drive all segments reliably. If you have added extensions: remove them temporarily and test the base strip alone. If it works, the extension is the problem — check that the extension connector is fully seated. Ensure the strip is not bent at sharp angles (less than 90 degrees). Sharp bends damage the internal copper traces and cause dead segments.
Step 3: Re-pair the Lightstrip to the Hue Bridge
If the strip is powered but unresponsive in the Hue app, the Zigbee pairing has been lost. Open the Hue app → Settings → Lights → check if the lightstrip appears. If it shows as "unreachable", tap it → Delete light to remove it. To re-pair: hold the small button on the controller box for 5 seconds until the LED flashes. The controller enters pairing mode. In the Hue app → Settings → Lights → Add light → Search. The app will find the controller within 30 seconds. If the app does not find it: move the controller closer to the Hue Bridge (within 10 metres) and try again. Zigbee range through walls is limited.
Step 4: Update Hue Bridge Firmware
Gradient effects require Bridge firmware version 1.50 or later. Older firmware does not support per-segment colour control. Open the Hue app → Settings → My Hue system → Software update → install any available updates. After updating, force-close the Hue app and reopen it. Also check for lightstrip firmware updates: Settings → Lights → tap the lightstrip → Device information → Software update.
Step 5: Fix Gradient Effects Not Showing
If the strip lights up in a single colour but gradient effects do not work: Gradient effects are only available in Hue Entertainment zones or when using Hue Sync (desktop app or Hue Sync Box). They are not available in standard room controls. To use gradient effects manually: open the Hue app → Entertainment areas → create or select an entertainment area that includes the lightstrip → Start entertainment. If using Hue Sync: ensure the Sync app is running on your computer and the lightstrip is assigned to the correct entertainment area. Gradient scenes (like "Tropical twilight") are available in the standard Hue app under Scenes — select the lightstrip room and browse gradient-compatible scenes.
Step 6: Fix Specific Segment Failures
If one or more segments of the lightstrip are dark or show the wrong colour: A dead segment usually indicates physical damage to that section of the strip. Check for kinks, cuts, or adhesive residue covering the LEDs. If the dead segment is at the end of the strip, the issue may be voltage drop — the power supply cannot deliver enough voltage to the far end. Shorten the strip or use a second power injection point. Contact Philips Hue support if the strip is under warranty (2 years from purchase). Dead segments are covered under warranty if caused by a manufacturing defect.
Step 7: Factory Reset the Controller
If all other steps fail, perform a factory reset. Hold the button on the controller box for 10 seconds until the LED flashes rapidly, then release. The controller will reset to factory defaults and need to be re-paired to the Bridge (see Step 3). Note: a factory reset does not affect other Hue lights or your
