Quick Summary
Philips Hue bulbs can be stuck in a Zigbee pairing state from a previous bridge or dimmer switch, making them impossible to add to a new bridge. Resetting requires a specific on-off sequence that puts the bulb into pairing mode. This works for all Hue bulb models (A19, BR30, etc.) and doesn't require any additional hardware — just a standard light switch.
When You Need This Fix You're trying to add a bulb to a new bridge, but it won't appear in the app. The bulb is stuck in pairing mode (flashing slowly) and won't connect. You've moved to a new house and want to use old Hue bulbs with a new bridge. The bulb was previously paired to a dimmer switch or remote that you no longer have.
Reset Sequence (Works for All Hue Bulbs) Turn the bulb ON using the wall switch. Wait 2 seconds. Turn the bulb OFF using the wall switch. Wait 2 seconds. Turn the bulb ON using the wall switch. Wait 2 seconds. Turn the bulb OFF using the wall switch. Wait 2 seconds. Turn the bulb ON using the wall switch. Wait 2 seconds. Turn the bulb OFF using the wall switch. Wait 2 seconds. Turn the bulb ON using the wall switch and leave it on.
The bulb will now flash slowly (approximately once per second), indicating it's in pairing mode.
Add the Reset Bulb to Your Bridge Open the Philips Hue app. Go to Settings → Lights → + (Add Light). The app will search for nearby lights in pairing mode. Select your bulb from the list and assign it to a room. The bulb should now be fully connected and controllable.
Troubleshooting Bulb won't flash after reset sequence: Try the sequence again, but count slowly (2 seconds per step). Some older bulbs are sensitive to timing. Bulb flashes but won't add to bridge: The bridge may be too far away. Move the bulb closer (within 30 feet) and try again. Bulb connects but then disconnects: The bridge may not have enough Zigbee range. Add a Hue extender or move the bridge closer to the bulb's location.
