Plug the keypad directly into a wall outlet using the supplied USB-C cable. Allow it to charge for at least 30 minutes before testing. If the keypad responds when plugged in but not on battery, the battery needs replacement. Ring Alarm keypads use a built-in lithium battery; contact Ring support for a replacement unit if the battery no longer holds a charge. Avoid using third-party USB-C cables that are not rated for charging. Use the original Ring cable or a certified 5V/2A USB-C cable.
Step 2: Reboot the Keypad
A firmware glitch can cause the keypad to freeze and stop responding to button presses even when the display appears normal. Wait 2 to 3 minutes for the Base Station to fully restart and re-establish Z-Wave connections with all devices. After the Base Station restarts, test the keypad again.
Step 4: Check Z-Wave Signal Strength
The Ring Alarm keypad uses Z-Wave to communicate with the Base Station. If the keypad is too far from the Base Station or there is significant interference, the Z-Wave connection will drop and the keypad will appear unresponsive. In the Ring app: tap the three-line menu, then Devices, then select your keypad, then Device Health. Check the signal strength indicator. If signal strength is Poor or Fair: move the keypad closer to the Base Station, or add a Ring Alarm Range Extender between the keypad and the Base Station. Z-Wave operates at 908 MHz (US) or 868 MHz (EU) and is generally not affected by Wi-Fi interference. However, thick concrete walls, metal doors, and large appliances can significantly reduce range. The Ring Alarm Range Extender plugs into a standard outlet and extends Z-Wave coverage by up to 45 metres.
Step 5: Check for a System Fault or Open Sensor

Common faults include open doors or windows, a tampered sensor, or a low-battery alert on another device. In the Ring app: tap the three-line menu, then Devices, then Alarm Base Station, and check for any fault indicators shown as yellow warning icons. Check all door and window sensors. Any sensor shown as Open will prevent the system from arming in Away mode. To arm with an open sensor: use the Ring app to arm the system and select Bypass for the open sensor. This arms the system while ignoring that specific sensor. Check for low-battery alerts on any Ring Alarm device. A device with a critically low battery can trigger a fault that prevents arming.
Step 6: Verify Your PIN
An incorrect PIN will cause the keypad to reject arming and disarming attempts. The keypad will beep and the display will flash red. Confirm your PIN in the Ring app: tap the three-line menu, then Settings, then Users, then select your user, then Access Codes.
