How Ring Alarm Arming Works

Step 1: Check for Open Sensors
The most common reason Ring Alarm will not arm is that one or more contact sensors are reporting as open. Open the Ring app → Security → Devices → look for any sensor showing Open status. Physically check the door or window that sensor is on. Even a slightly ajar door will prevent arming. If the sensor shows open but the door is closed: the sensor magnet may be misaligned. The magnet (the smaller piece) should be within 1 cm of the sensor body. Adjust its position and check the app again. If the sensor is stuck showing open after realignment: remove the sensor cover and reseat the battery. A loose battery causes false "open" readings. To arm despite an open sensor: Ring app → Security → tap the arm mode → Bypass the open sensor. Note: bypassed sensors are not monitored while armed.
Step 2: Check Sensor and Keypad Battery Levels
Low-battery devices may fail to acknowledge arm/disarm commands, causing the Base Station to time out. Ring app → Security → Devices → tap each device → check Battery Level. Step 3: Fix Z-Wave Communication Failures
Ring Alarm uses Z-Wave for all device communication. Interference or distance issues cause arm/disarm failures. Ensure the Base Station is centrally located and not inside a metal cabinet or near a microwave, cordless phone base, or baby monitor (all operate on 2.4 GHz and can interfere with Z-Wave at 908 MHz). If a keypad or sensor is more than 30 feet from the Base Station with walls in between, add a Ring Range Extender between them. To test Z-Wave connectivity: Ring app → Security → Devices → tap a device → Device Health → check signal strength. Anything below "Good" needs a range extender. Perform a Z-Wave network refresh: Ring app → Security → Base Station → Z-Wave → Refresh Network. This rebuilds the mesh and can resolve intermittent communication failures.
Step 4: Fix Keypad Not Responding

Check your internet connection. The Ring app requires an active internet connection to send arm/disarm commands remotely. On-site keypad arming works without internet. Log out of the Ring app and log back in: Account → Log Out → sign in again. Check Ring’s service status at status.ring.com for any active outages.
Step 6: Check Entry and Exit Delay Settings
If the alarm appears to arm but then immediately disarms, the entry delay may be set to zero. Ring app → Security → Settings → Modes → Away (or Home) → Entry Delay. Set the entry delay to at least 30 seconds so you have time to disarm after entering. Also check the Exit Delay (the countdown before the alarm fully arms after you leave). If it is set to 0, the alarm arms instantly and any open sensor will prevent it.
