Quick Summary
The Ring Chime Pro is a Wi-Fi extender and doorbell chime in one. When it fails to connect, the cause is almost always a Wi-Fi credential mismatch, a 5 GHz band incompatibility, or a failed pairing sequence in the Ring app. Unlike Ring cameras, the Chime Pro must be set up through the Ring app and cannot be configured via a web browser. This guide covers all connection failure scenarios for the Ring Chime Pro (1st and 2nd generation) and the standard Ring Chime.
Ring Chime Pro LED Status Guide
Step 1: Check Your Wi-Fi Band
The Ring Chime Pro (1st generation) only supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. The 2nd generation supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, but defaults to 2.4 GHz during setup. Check which generation you have: the 2nd generation has a slightly larger body and a USB-C port on the side. Log into your router's admin panel (usually at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) and confirm that 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi is enabled. If your router uses a combined SSID for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz (band steering): during setup, move the Chime Pro close to the router so it connects to 2.4 GHz rather than 5 GHz. Ensure the 2.4 GHz network uses WPA2 security. Ring devices have limited WPA3 compatibility.
Step 2: Put the Chime Pro into Setup Mode
Before adding or reconnecting the Chime Pro, it must be in setup mode. Plug the Chime Pro into a wall socket near your router. Press and hold the setup button on the side of the Chime Pro for 5 seconds until the LED flashes white. Release the button. The LED will continue flashing white, indicating setup mode. If the LED does not flash: unplug the Chime Pro, wait 10 seconds, plug it back in, and try again.
Step 3: Add or Reconnect in the Ring App
With the Chime Pro in setup mode, use the Ring app to connect it to your Wi-Fi network. Open the Ring app → tap the menu icon (☰) → Devices → Set Up a Device → Chimes → Chime Pro. Follow the in-app steps. The app will prompt you to connect your phone to the Chime Pro's temporary Wi-Fi hotspot (named "Ring-XXXXXX"). After connecting to the hotspot, return to the Ring app and enter your home Wi-Fi name and password. The Chime Pro will reboot and connect to your router. The LED will turn solid white when connected.
Step 4: Fix "Unable to Join Network" Errors
If the Ring app shows "Unable to Join Network" or "Connection Failed" after entering your Wi-Fi password: Double-check the Wi-Fi password. Ring passwords are case-sensitive. If your password contains special characters, try changing it temporarily to letters and numbers only to rule out encoding issues. Move the Chime Pro closer to the router during setup. Weak signal during the initial connection is a common cause of setup failures. Ensure your router's firewall is not blocking new devices. Check if MAC address filtering is enabled on your router — if it is, add the Chime Pro's MAC address to the allowed list. The MAC address is printed on the back of the Chime Pro. Restart your router: unplug it for 30 seconds, plug it back in, wait 2 minutes, then retry the setup.
Step 5: Fix the Ring App Not Finding the Chime Pro Hotspot
If the Ring app cannot find the "Ring-XXXXXX" Wi-Fi hotspot during setup: Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone. The Ring app uses Bluetooth to detect nearby Ring devices during setup. Grant the Ring app location permissions. On iOS: Settings → Ring → Location → While Using. On Android: Settings → Apps → Ring → Permissions → Location → Allow. Disable mobile data on your phone during setup. Some phones switch to mobile data when the Ring hotspot has no internet, which breaks the setup flow. On iOS: go to Settings → Wi-Fi → manually connect to the "Ring-XXXXXX" network, then return to the Ring app. Reset the Chime Pro (Step 2) and retry immediately after the LED starts flashing.
Step 6: Reconnect After a Wi-Fi Password Change
If your Chime Pro was working but stopped connecting after you changed your Wi-Fi password: Ring app → Devices → tap the Chime Pro → Device Health → Change Wi-Fi Network. Put the Chime Pro into setup mode (Step 2) and follow the reconnection prompts in the app. Enter the new Wi-Fi password when prompted.
Step 7: Fix Chime Pro Not Ringing When Doorbell is Pressed
If the Chime Pro is connected to Wi-Fi but does not ring when your doorbell is pressed: Ring app → Devices → tap the Chime Pro → Linked Doorbells → confirm your doorbell is listed and linked. If the doorbell is not linked: tap Link a Doorbell and select your Ring doorbell from the list. Check the chime volume: Ring app → Devices → tap the Chime Pro → Chime Tones → adjust the volume slider. Check Do Not Disturb settings: Ring app → Devices → tap the Chime Pro → Do Not Disturb → ensure it is disabled. Check Motion Alerts and Ring Alerts are enabled on the doorbell: Ring app → Devices → tap the doorbell → Alert Settings.
Step 8: Factory Reset the Chime Pro
If all other steps fail, a factory reset clears all stored settings and returns the Chime Pro to its default state. Press and hold the
