Step 1: Confirm the Device Is Online
A Spotlight Cam that has lost Wi-Fi will not detect or record any motion. Before adjusting any settings, verify the device is actually connected. Open the Ring app → tap the three lines (menu) → Devices → select your Spotlight Cam. Tap Device Health. The status should show Connected. If it shows Offline: check your Wi-Fi router is working, then press the setup button on the camera once to attempt reconnection. If it stays offline, re-run the setup process. Check Signal Strength (RSSI). Anything worse than -65 dBm will cause intermittent recording failures even when the device appears online.
Step 2: Adjust Motion Zones and Sensitivity
This is the most common cause of missed detections. Ring's default motion zones are conservative and often exclude the exact area you want to monitor. Ring app → Devices → Spotlight Cam → Motion Settings → Edit Motion Zones. You will see a live camera view with a blue overlay. Drag the corners of the zone to cover the full area you want monitored — driveway, path, gate, etc. Tap Save. Back in Motion Settings, find Motion Sensitivity and increase it to at least 7/10 for outdoor use. The default of 5/10 misses motion beyond 15 feet. If you have Smart Alerts (People Only mode) enabled, switch to All Motion temporarily to test whether the PIR sensor is working at all.
Step 3: Check Motion Frequency and Schedule
Two Ring settings silently suppress motion alerts without any warning to the user. Motion Frequency: Ring app → Devices → Spotlight Cam → Motion Settings → Motion Frequency. If set to Regularly or Periodically, Ring deliberately skips some motion events to save battery. Change to Frequent for maximum sensitivity. Motion Schedule: Ring app → Devices → Spotlight Cam → Motion Settings → Motion Schedule. If a schedule is active, it disables motion detection during the scheduled hours. Disable the schedule entirely for testing. Modes: Ring app → Devices → check the current Mode (Home, Away, Disarmed). In Disarmed mode, motion alerts are off by default. Switch to Away mode and re-test.
Step 4: Fix Notification Delivery
If motion events appear in Event History but you are not receiving phone alerts, the detection is working — the notification pipeline is broken. Ring app → Account → Notifications → confirm Motion notifications are toggled ON for your Spotlight Cam. On Android: Settings → Apps → Ring → Battery → set to Unrestricted. Samsung users: also check Settings → Device Care → Battery → Background Usage Limits and remove Ring from the sleeping apps list. On iOS: Settings → Notifications → Ring → confirm Allow Notifications is ON and Alerts is set to Immediate Delivery. Check that Do Not Disturb / Focus Mode is not silencing Ring alerts.
Step 5: Fix Night-Time Motion Detection Failures
Ring Spotlight Cams use passive infrared (PIR) sensors that detect heat signatures. Cold nights reduce the temperature differential between a human body and the environment, which can lower detection range. Increase Motion Sensitivity to 8–10/10 for winter or cold-climate use. Ensure the camera lens and PIR sensor window are clean. Spiderwebs, dust, and condensation directly block the sensor. Check that the spotlight LEDs are not washing out the camera image at night. If the image is overexposed, the camera's image processing may be suppressing motion detection. Reduce spotlight brightness in Device Settings → Light Settings. Verify Night Vision is set to Standard (not Color Night Vision if available on your model — color mode uses ambient light and performs worse in complete darkness).
Step 6: Force a Firmware Refresh
A known firmware regression in Ring Spotlight Cam firmware versions 1.4.x–1.6.x causes the motion engine to freeze after 7–14 days of uptime. The device appears online but records nothing. Ring app → Devices → Spotlight Cam → Device Health → Firmware. Note the current version. If not showing Up to Date: connect the camera to power (if battery-powered, ensure battery is above 50%) and leave it connected for 30 minutes. Ring pushes firmware updates automatically when the device is online and idle. If already showing Up to Date but motion stopped working: perform a soft reboot by pressing the setup button once. This restarts the motion engine without wiping configuration. If the soft reboot does not help: hold the setup button for 10 seconds to perform a hard reboot (not a factory reset — configuration is preserved).
