Quick Summary
Schlage Encode keypad failures split into two types: the keypad not lighting up at all (battery or hardware issue) and access codes not being accepted (wrong code, expired code, or a firmware bug that corrupts the access code database). Schlage locks also have a lockout feature that temporarily disables the keypad after too many wrong attempts — this catches many users off guard.
Step 1: Check Battery Level
The Schlage Encode uses 4 AA batteries. A low battery is the most common cause of keypad issues. Press the Schlage button (the round button above the keypad). The keypad should light up within 1 second. If no light: batteries are dead. Replace with fresh alkaline AA batteries. If the keypad lights up but dims quickly: batteries are low. Replace them. Schlage recommends replacing batteries annually or when the low battery indicator appears in the Schlage Home app.
Step 2: Check for Keypad Lockout
After 5 consecutive wrong access code attempts, the Schlage Encode locks out the keypad for 30 seconds. After 10 wrong attempts, lockout extends to 3 minutes. Wait 3 minutes without touching the keypad. Try the correct access code again. If you don't know the correct code: use the Schlage Home app to check or reset access codes remotely (requires Wi-Fi connection).
Step 3: Verify Access Code in App Schlage Home app → Access Codes → find the code you're trying to use. Check Access Schedule: codes can be set to work only during specific hours or days. Check Expiry Date: temporary codes expire automatically. Delete the code and re-add it if the settings look correct but the code still fails.
Step 4: Re-Enter the Programming Code
The Schlage Encode has a built-in programming code (printed on the back of the lock or in the original packaging). This code always works regardless of app connectivity. Find the programming code on the sticker inside the battery compartment. Enter the programming code on the keypad. If the lock opens, the lock hardware is working fine — the issue is with user access codes. Use the Schlage Home app to delete all access codes and re-add them.
Step 5: Update Firmware
A bug in Schlage Encode firmware versions 10.0.x caused access codes to stop working after a Wi-Fi reconnection event. The fix was released in firmware 10.1.0. Schlage Home app → Settings → Lock → Firmware Update → update if available. Keep the lock powered and within Wi-Fi range during the update (5–10 minutes). After updating, test all access codes.
