Step 1: Confirm 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi Log into your router admin panel. Confirm a 2.4 GHz SSID is broadcasting separately from 5 GHz. If using band-steering (single SSID): disable it or create a dedicated 2.4 GHz network for the lock. The Schlage Home app will show an error during setup if it detects a 5 GHz network.
Step 2: Check Router Security Settings
Schlage Encode requires WPA2 (AES). WPA3 and WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode with WPA3 as primary can cause connection failures. Router admin panel → Wireless Security → set to WPA2 Personal (AES). Avoid TKIP encryption — Schlage requires AES. Save settings and restart the router before retrying setup.
Step 3: Run the Setup Process Correctly Download the Schlage Home app (not the older Schlage Sense app). Create or log into your Schlage account. Tap + → Add Device → Schlage Encode. Press the Schlage button on the lock to wake it, then press and hold for 10 seconds until the lock beeps and the LED flashes. Follow in-app prompts. When asked for Wi-Fi, select your 2.4 GHz network and enter the password. Keep your phone within 10 feet of the lock during setup.
Step 4: Check Lock Placement and Signal Strength
The Schlage Encode has a built-in Wi-Fi radio but its antenna is inside a metal housing, which reduces range compared to a standard Wi-Fi device. Use a phone or laptop at the door location to check Wi-Fi signal strength. You need at least -65 dBm for reliable operation. If signal is weak: move your router closer, add a Wi-Fi extender near the door, or install a mesh node. Metal doors and frames significantly reduce Wi-Fi signal. If your door is metal, a Wi-Fi extender on the same side as the lock is essential.
Step 5: Factory Reset the Lock
If setup fails repeatedly, a factory reset clears any partial configuration. Disconnect the battery pack. Press and hold the Schlage button. While holding the button, reconnect the battery pack. Continue holding for 10 seconds until the lock beeps 3 times and the LED flashes green. Release. The lock is now in factory default state. Re-run setup from the Schlage Home app.
