Quick Summary
Sonos Error 30 on the desktop controller means the Sonos app and your speaker system are out of sync — the app is trying to update the speaker firmware, but the speaker is already running a newer version (or the update is stuck in a loop). This happens when you upgrade the Sonos app before upgrading your speakers, or when a previous update failed and left the system in an inconsistent state. The fix is to downgrade the app or factory reset the speaker system.
When Error 30 Appears You open the Sonos desktop app and see: "Error 30: Unable to update." The app keeps prompting you to update, even after you've already updated. The update starts but fails partway through, then repeats. The mobile app works fine, but the desktop app shows the error.
Step 1: Restart the Sonos App and Router Close the Sonos desktop app completely. Unplug your Wi-Fi router for 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Wait 2 minutes for the router to fully boot. Reopen the Sonos app. Check if the error is gone. If it persists, proceed to Step 2.
Step 2: Downgrade the Sonos Desktop App If you recently updated the Sonos app, the error may be due to a version mismatch. Uninstall the current version: Control Panel → Programs → Sonos → Uninstall. Download an older version of the Sonos app from the Sonos website (previous version). Install the older version and test if the error goes away. Once confirmed, you can update to the latest version again.
Step 3: Update All Speakers to the Latest Firmware Open the Sonos mobile app (not desktop). Sonos app → Settings → System → About My System. For each speaker, check if an update is available. If updates are available, tap Update and wait for each speaker to complete. Do NOT unplug speakers during updates.
Step 4: Factory Reset the Sonos System If Error 30 persists after updating all speakers, factory reset the entire system: Sonos app → Settings → System → Advanced Audio → Factory Reset. Confirm the reset. All speakers will reboot and return to factory settings. After reset, re-add all speakers: Sonos app → + → Add Speaker → follow prompts for each speaker.
Step 5: Reinstall the Desktop App Uninstall the Sonos desktop app completely. Restart your computer. Download the latest Sonos app from the official Sonos website. Install the fresh copy. Open the app and verify that Error 30 is gone.
