Quick Summary
The Sonos Five produces no sound or stops playing when it is grouped with another speaker that has a volume conflict, when its audio output settings are misconfigured (line-in vs. internal), when the Sonos app has lost the room assignment, when the speaker's firmware is outdated, or when the speaker has a hardware fault caused by a power surge. The Sonos Five is the flagship single-room speaker in the Sonos range and includes a line-in port for connecting external audio sources, which introduces additional configuration failure modes not present on other Sonos speakers. This guide covers every no-sound scenario.
Sonos Five Audio Sources
Step 1: Check Volume and Mute State
Before any other troubleshooting, confirm the speaker is not muted or at zero volume. In the Sonos app: tap the room containing the Five → check the volume slider. Ensure it is above 10. Check the physical volume buttons on the top of the Five. Press the + button several times. If the Five is grouped with other speakers: check the group volume as well as the individual room volume. The group volume overrides individual room volumes when set to zero. Check the Sonos app for a mute icon (speaker with a line through it) on the room tile. Tap it to unmute.
Step 2: Check Line-In Configuration
The Sonos Five has a line-in port on the back (3.5mm stereo or RCA via adapter). If a cable is plugged in but the line-in source is not selected, or if the line-in is selected but no cable is plugged in, the speaker will appear to play but produce no sound. Sonos app → tap the Five's room → check what source is currently selected. If it shows "Line-In" but you want to stream music, tap the source and switch to a streaming service. If you are trying to use line-in: ensure the cable is firmly plugged into the Five's line-in port and the source device (TV, turntable, etc.) is powered on and outputting audio. Sonos app → Settings → System → tap the Five → Line-In → ensure Line-In Source is set correctly ("Line-In" for the rear port). If using the Five as a stereo pair: line-in is only available on the primary speaker of the pair, not the secondary. Ensure the cable is connected to the correct unit.
Step 3: Fix Grouped Playback Issues
When the Five is grouped with other Sonos speakers, volume and playback conflicts can cause it to appear silent. Sonos app → tap the group → expand the group to see individual room volumes. Ensure the Five's individual volume is not at zero. Ungroup the Five temporarily: tap and hold the Five's room tile → Separate. Play audio directly to the Five alone. If it plays, the issue is with the group configuration. If the Five is set as a stereo pair or a surround speaker for a Sonos Arc/Beam: it will not play independently. It only plays as part of the home theatre group. To test independently, remove it from the stereo pair or surround configuration: Settings → System → tap the Five → Separate Stereo Pair or Remove Surrounds.
Step 4: Restart the Speaker
A soft restart clears temporary audio processing errors without losing settings. Sonos app → Settings → System → tap the Five → Restart. Wait 60 seconds for the speaker to come back online. Alternatively: unplug the Five's power cable from the wall, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in. The LED on the back will flash white during boot. After restarting, wait for the LED to turn solid white before testing audio.
Step 5: Check Wi-Fi and Network Connection
The Five must be connected to the Sonos network to receive streaming audio. If it is offline, the Sonos app will show it as greyed out or unavailable. Sonos app → Settings → System → About My Sonos System → find the Five and check its IP address. If it shows no IP address, it is not connected to the network. If using Wi-Fi: check that the Five is within range of the router or a wired Sonos device acting as a SonosNet node. Move it closer to the router temporarily to test. If using a wired Ethernet connection: check the cable and try a different Ethernet port on the router. Restart your router (unplug for 30 seconds) and wait for the Five to reconnect.
Step 6: Update Firmware
Outdated firmware can cause audio processing bugs that result in silence. Sonos app → Settings → System → System Updates → Update Now. If the Five cannot connect to update: connect it via Ethernet directly to the router, then retry. After updating, restart the speaker and test audio.
Step 7: Factory Reset the Five
If all other steps fail, a factory reset removes all settings and forces a fresh setup. With the Five powered on, hold the Join button on the back for 5 seconds until the LED flashes orange and white. Release the button. The Five will reboot into setup mode (flashing white LED). Sonos app → Settings → System → Add Product → follow the setup prompts. After setup, recreate any stereo pairs, surround configurations, or line-in settings.
