Quick Summary
When a Sonos Move won't charge, the issue is almost always the charging base, the USB-C cable, or a firmware bug that has locked the battery management system. The Move charges via its inductive charging base or a USB-C cable — both paths can fail independently. Work through these steps in order.
Symptom Diagnosis
Step 1: Reseat the Move on the Charging Base
The Move charges inductively — alignment matters. Even a few millimetres off-centre can break the charging connection. Remove the Move from the base completely. Check the base contacts (the metal ring on the base) for debris or corrosion. Wipe with a dry cloth. Place the Move back on the base, pressing down firmly until you feel it seat. The LED on the Move should turn orange (charging) within 5 seconds. If no LED: try rotating the Move slightly on the base.
Step 2: Test with USB-C Cable
The Move 2 supports USB-C charging directly. If the base isn't working, USB-C confirms whether the battery itself is the issue. Connect a USB-C cable (USB-C to USB-C or USB-A to USB-C) to the port on the back of the Move. Connect the other end to a wall adapter (at least 18W recommended). The LED should turn orange within 30 seconds. If USB-C charges but the base doesn't: the base is the problem (see Step 3). If USB-C also doesn't charge: the battery or charging circuit may need service.
Step 3: Check the Charging Base Power Supply Unplug the charging base from the wall. Check the cable connecting the base to the power supply for damage. Try a different wall outlet. If the base has an LED indicator: check it's lit (solid white = powered). Plug the base back in and reseat the Move.
Step 4: Perform a Battery Calibration Cycle
If the Move shows charging but the battery percentage doesn't increase, the battery gauge may be miscalibrated. Fully drain the Move: use it until it shuts off automatically. Place on the charging base and leave for at least 5 hours without interruption. After 5 hours: check the battery percentage in the Sonos app. Sonos app → tap the Move → Room Settings → About This Speaker → check battery level. If it now shows 100%: calibration worked.
Step 5: Restart the Move Press and hold the Power button on the back for 5 seconds until the LED flashes white. Release. The Move will restart. Place back on the charging base. Check for the orange charging LED.
Step 6: Update Sonos Firmware
Firmware bugs have caused charging issues on the Move in past versions. Sonos app → Settings → System → System Updates → Check for Updates. If an update is available: install it. After updating: restart the Move and test charging.
Step 7: Factory Reset (Last Resort)
If nothing else works, factory reset the Move. With the Move powered on, press and hold the Join button and the Power button simultaneously for 5 seconds. The LED will flash orange and white. Release. The Move will reboot into setup mode. Re-add via Sonos app → + → Add Speaker. Test charging after setup.
