Quick Summary
Xiaomi Mi Smart Bulbs fail to connect for four main reasons: the bulb is being added to a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network (it only supports 2.4 GHz), the Mi Home app region is set incorrectly, the bulb wasn't reset properly before setup, or the router's AP isolation feature is blocking device discovery. All four are fixable in under 10 minutes.
Symptom Diagnosis
Step 1: Confirm Your Wi-Fi Is 2.4 GHz
Mi Smart Bulbs support 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only. They will not connect to 5 GHz networks. Check your router's admin panel or app to confirm you have a 2.4 GHz network active. If your router uses a combined SSID (same name for 2.4 and 5 GHz), temporarily disable the 5 GHz band during setup, or create a separate 2.4 GHz-only SSID. Your phone must also be connected to the 2.4 GHz network during setup — not the 5 GHz band.
Step 2: Reset the Bulb Properly
Before adding a bulb to the app, it must be in pairing mode (indicated by a slow pulse or rapid blink depending on model). Turn the bulb on and off 5 times in quick succession (1-second intervals) using the physical switch. The bulb should flash 3 times to confirm it has reset. If no flash: try the on/off cycle again. Some models require exactly 5 cycles; others require 3. Once in pairing mode, open Mi Home immediately — the pairing window is approximately 3 minutes.
Step 3: Check Mi Home App Region
Xiaomi uses regional servers. If your app region doesn't match where the bulb was purchased, it will appear offline even after successful setup. Open Mi Home app → tap your profile icon (top left) → Settings → Region. Set region to match where you purchased the bulb (e.g., Mainland China, Europe, United States). If you're unsure: try Europe first for bulbs purchased outside China. After changing region: delete the bulb from the app and re-add it.
Step 4: Disable AP Isolation on Your Router
AP Isolation (also called 'Client Isolation' or 'Wireless Isolation') prevents devices on the same Wi-Fi network from communicating with each other. This blocks the Mi Home app from discovering the bulb. Log into your router admin panel (typically 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1). Find Wireless Settings or Advanced Wireless. Look for AP Isolation, Client Isolation, or Wireless Isolation — disable it. Save and restart the router. Retry the bulb setup.
Step 5: Fix Offline Bulb After Successful Setup
If the bulb was added successfully but shows as offline in the app: Confirm the bulb is physically powered on (light is on). Force-close and reopen the Mi Home app. Check that your phone has an active internet connection — Mi Home requires internet to control bulbs even on local network. Go to Mi Home → bulb → Settings → Check for firmware update. An available update sometimes resolves connectivity bugs.
Step 6: Use Mi Home with Google Home or Alexa
Once the bulb is connected in Mi Home, you can link it to Google Home or Alexa: Google Home: Open Google Home → '+' → Set up device → Works with Google → search 'Mi Home' → sign in. Alexa: Open Alexa app → More → Skills & Games → search 'Mi Home' → Enable → sign in. After linking, say 'Hey Google, discover devices' or use Alexa's device discovery to add the bulb.
